Im not going to lie. I am an avid gambler and enjoy going to the racetrack as well as the casino. About a year or so ago, Pennsylvania legalized slot machines and video gaming at licensed casinos across the state. Before my local racetrack (The Meadows) had legal slot machines, I was a big fan of Wheeling Island Casino.
Wheeling Island Casino originally started out solely as a Dog Track, which offered Greyhound racing on a daily basis. However, Wheeling found it hard to attract gamblers from Western Pennsylvania by just offering greyhound racing as a means of gambling. Wheeling Island built a brand new casino with two levels and three seperate rooms offering a vast array of different types of slot machines. Wheeling Island saw a huge jump in visitors from Western Pennsylvania as well as Eastern Ohio. Pennsylvania saw how much money it was losing in annual tax revenue from not allowing legalized slots in the state. So in 2006-2007 the State of Pennsylvania legalized video slots to combat the loss of revenue to Wheeling, West Virgina.
West Virginia was not about to stand idle and watch their great tax revenue leave the state and go back to Pennsylvania, so in 2007, West Virginia legalized table games in certain licensed casinos across the state.
Wheeling Island Casino offers gamblers the choice of Blackjack, Roulette, Craps, Money Wheel, as well as a few other card game options. Wheeling Island Casino also offers a full featured Poker room with many tournaments and games.
As of the date this article was written, there are no plans to legalize table games in the State of Pennsylvania. The closest thing you can get to “table games” in Pennsylvania are Video Roulette and Video Poker/Blackjack.
Now my thoughts on Wheeling Island Casino and The Meadows Racetrack and Casino vary greatly. Here are my thoughts:
WHEELING ISLAND CASINO:
- $15 minimum on blackjack and craps tables
- Very Bad Rewards/Perks program. In Las Vegas, after playing for 3-4 days for 2 hours a day at the Venetian Hotel and Casino, I was offered 3 free nights in a suite. Now I am not a high roller. I am a poor college graduate who gambles maybe $200-300 a day in Vegas. After many trips to Wheeling Island and thousands of dollars later, Wheeling Island refuses to even offer me a free buffet or even $5 in free play! How can a hotel in Las Vegas offer me 3 free nights in a suite for less time and play than Wheeling, which at one point, I was visiting 2-3 nights a week! That is insane!
- Very dumb and ignorant employees! Wheeling Island has some of the dumbest employees you will ever meet! I have never in my life seen a blackjack dealer that after they had dealt you cards, had to stop the game so they could count on their fingers what your total was so far (over/under 21). The dealers were constantly over and under paying your winnings.
- Pit Bosses are a joke! In Las Vegas, if you take a look at the Pit Boss that is on duty, it is usually someone dressed very nicely, typically a man, but sometimes a woman. The pit boss usually looks stern and is always watching players to see if anyone is cheating or if there is any suspicion of cheating. At Wheeling Island, the pit bosses are the complete opposite. The pit bosses look like they just bought a cheap suit from the five and dime store or Goodwill. They dont pay attention to players or dealers and are usually busy chatting with other pit bosses about the most recent basketball/football/hockey game that was on. When the dealer is asking for them to verify a customer buy-in they never hear and don’t care. How can you be the “security” and “manager” of an area of the casino if you can’t even perform the basic tasks of your job?
- Wheeling Island Casino does offer a wonderful buffet and a bunch of other really good dining choices. The restaurants range from a cheap food court to a nice upscale restaurant called “The Pointe”.
- Wheeling Island Casino also offers a really nice hotel with beautiful rooms and very good rates. The only down side to the hotel is that it is always booked! If you want to stay at the hotel, you need to book weeks or months in advance.
THE MEADOWS RACETRACK AND CASINO:
- The casino itself is a temporary structure that they built while they are building the new racetrack and casino. The building is nice, but could be bigger and offer more games.
- Parking at The Meadows is horrific! Unless you arrive between 7-8 in the morning, you usually have to park near or on top of the hill and walk for a few minutes until you reach the building.
- The slot machines are always so tight! I have only walked away from The Meadows “up” 2 or 3 times, and by “up” I mean about $200. On a typical night I will spend $100 and play for anywhere from 8 minutes to 2 hours, depending on how tight the machines are.
- 5 times points days and promotions days are a nightmare! Not only can you not find parking, but you can never even get on a machine. Avoid The Meadows on any bonus or special days.
- The Rewards Program at The Meadows is very good. I usually receive a total of about $100 or so in free money to play with each week. Now this amount is never all at once, but spread over a period of 2-3 different days. But this is fine, since I live 10 minutes from the casino, as I can drive the short distance, spend a few bucks, then head home. No worry about an hour or more drive to Wheeling.
- The Horse Racing at The Meadows Racetrack is all Harness Racing. I am a HUGE fan of harness racing and honestly love The Meadows. Now, I am not refering to a similarly named track “The Meadowlands” as that is in New Jersey. However, every once in a while, great drivers from The Meadowlands, such as Brian Sears, Tim Tetrick, and John Campbell, travel from Jersey to Pittsburgh to race. I love those days, as The Meadows is home to one of Harness Racings finest drivers, named Dave Palone.
Other local casinos around the tri-state area are Mountaineer Racetrack and Casino (Chester, West Virginia) and Northfield Park (Cleveland, Ohio). I will review those casinos in a future post. For now, let me leave you with this piece of advice. If you are looking to play some table games and have money to throw away, pay a visit to Wheeling Island Casino. However, if you are looking to actually “win” money and have a fun time playing cards or dice, save your money and travel to Las Vegas. In Las Vegas, I received Free Hotel Nights, Free Meals, Free Drinks, Free Everything! In Wheeling, I can’t even get a free $10 buffet.
Good Luck and Good Gambling!
